Ken Roberts
Ken Roberts is, in my opinion, another prominent purveyor of hype. A college dropout and former life insurance salesman, Roberts convinces investors that they can become successful traders with a starting capital of only $1,000.
In 1983 he self-published The World's Most Powerful Money Manual & Course, a mail-order book that contains strategies on futures along with tips about getting everything you want (mentally, physically, and spiritually) out of life.
He claims to have sold more than 300,000 copies and, at $195 each, that adds up to nearly $60 million. Roberts, who touts futures trading as the world's one perfect business, charges $2,695 for his advanced trading seminar. He hawks trading charts, a course on options, a newsletter and his novel, The Rich Man's Secret.
Ken Roberts' course will not teach you anything new. It's the same information that's available in various free manuals and books. It's simpler and less expensive to collect information about commodity trading through your local bookstores or libraries than his course.
Ken Roberts earns good money not through the commodities market but by selling his courses. Ken claims to have earned $60 million through sale of courses. Roberts also earns good money through the high commissions of his brokerage firm.
Most of people buying Ken Roberts' programs have not been able to make any headway into the commodity business. Ken himself admits that 95% of commodity marketers lose their money, yet he still tries to sell the idea that it's a simple thing to succeed in.
Believe me when I say this, Ken Roberts is more interested in selling and marketing courses than implementing them in the actual commodity market. He also owns a piece of a California brokerage firm, Main Street Trading. It charges commissions so high ($95 a trade) that they virtually assure that most small active traders will lose money. The hype has paid off for Roberts. It has brought him tens of millions of dollars and an Oregon mansion with a cigar room. But where are his customers' mansions? I don't waste my time with fake market gurus anymore because I found something that's a lot better. This opportunity has changed the way I think about making money.
