Social Engineering
Social engineering is very notorious term used in political science as well as computing technology. The term social engineering in computing technology is hacker's slang meaning the use of tricky practices to make a person reveal his confidential information such as IDs, passwords, online bank account etc. A social engineer is a con man using various programming skills and other hacker techniques to execute social engineering. In simple words, social engineering is the activity of fraudulently acquiring the confidential information of a person thru Internet or telephone. Social engineering techniques can be executed in various ways and used for numerous fraudulent purposes. A social engineering hacker may acquire information about a company or organization by calling as a customer, or thru internet advertisements. Phone calling is one of the most common social engineering techniques. One of the other social engineering techniques is impersonation. A social engineer may first pretend to be a customer to collect information such as employees, supervisor's names, phone numbers and additional "non-sensitive" information. Later he may assume the identity of an internal employee and cheat the other internal employees to acquire the sensitive information such as passwords, internal phone numbers etc. using his social engineering techniques. A social engineer may also develop a healthy relation with an internal employee of a company, and may win his trust later that helps him make the internal employee reveal the sensitive information about the company. Social engineering is creatively exploiting the emotions and personal weaknesses of a certain person. It may also include emotional blackmailing. Social engineering is considered as one of the biggest dangers for corporations nowadays. It's the scam that cannot be prevented by using even the best anti-virus programs or firewalls.
