Pyramid Schemes
The term "Pyramid Scheme" is used for an illegal investment scam based on a hierarchical setup. A pyramid scheme may be initiated by an individual or a company and it involves recruiting members that provide funding to an individual or a company. Each member recruits new members and each new member further recruits more new members, and so the chain goes on. It's called a pyramid scheme because it forms a business structure that looks like an Egyptian pyramid The new recruits make up the base of a pyramid scheme and provide the funding to the members immediately above them. Those members do the same for their immediate above members and so on. A pyramid scheme usually promises guaranteed returns and the thought of having hundreds of people under you paying you money is used to entice new members. As the scheme starts, the earliest investors do receive a high rate of return, but the later members fail to sustain the payment structure, and the pyramid always collapses with most people losing their investments. The pyramids generally collapse because new recruits start to realize that the setup is nothing but a fraud and back out of their payments hoping to at least save some of their money. The latest new recruits at the lowest level are usually the major losers in a pyramid scheme. Businesses models such as multi-level marketing (MLM), network marketing, and matrix schemes or elevator schemes closely resemble pyramid schemes. They are all based on the fact that the system will collapse if a continuous stream of new recruits is not always available. Some countries have very strict laws against the pyramid schemes. US citizens may lodge complaints against pyramid schemes with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the State's Securities Commission, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the FBI Internet Fraud Complaint Center Internal Revenue Service (IRS), or the State's Consumer Affairs office.
