Internet Identity Theft
Identity theft occurs if someone assesses your personal information without your knowledge and uses such knowledge to commit thefts or frauds. Internet identity theft is such theft when it occurs through the Internet. Basically here is how it works. Some criminal acquires all your personal details, credit card number, social security number, and similar personal information through the Internet. They then use all this info to buy things on line using your credit card and you land up with many huge bills. If that's not bad enough, this often ruins your credit and collectors surround you to collect their bills. Your pleas are ignored because they feel you are using such tactics to evade payment. This is Internet identity theft. There are many different ways that Internet identity theft occurs. Sometimes certain credit card companies ask for information in an open e-mail. Do not divulge any details; instead inform the police, as these are the criminals who are phishing for personal information. Legitimate companies will never divulge or ask for any credit card details in the mail. Another ways that scammers collect personal information causing Internet identity theft is by setting up incredible offers on the Internet but you need to contact them through some offline method and reveal information about yourself. Obviously these offers aren't real and are only designed to steal your personal information. It's amazing how many people fall for that one! Another type of Internet identity theft is when spyware is installed on your computer through a "dirty" website or program. Spyware can copy and delete data and even download certain files and other information from your computer. You can prevent this type of Internet identity theft by installing a recent and updated antivirus program and a personal firewall. Otherwise it's just so easy for someone to get their programs on your computer and start stealing your information. Internet identity theft is fast emerging as the most common theft in America today. Around ten million Americans are victims and have had a loss of more than $5 billion. Simple measures can save you from a lot of lost time and money. Always tear off any paper containing any of your personal information into small bits before throwing it away. Do not divulge any of your personal information over phone, through the mail, or over the Internet. Always check your statements often and make sure to inform your credit card company if there is a charge that you never made. The sooner you discover it the better.
