Credit card fraud is one of the most popular frauds associated with credit cards, charge cards, debit cards, or prepaid cards. Credit card fraud is also often called internet credit card fraud, or online credit card fraud, or merchant credit card fraud. The criminals in credit card fraud trick the merchants, such as business owners, service provider, seller, etc., by using fake credit cards or credit card information. These fraudsters make merchants believe that the credit card accounts that they are providing will offer them payments, and the victim merchants provide them merchandise, goods and services, but for nothing. They never get payment from the fake credit card accounts. In some cases the fraudsters make a credit card of another person to pay for their own purchases. Credit card fraud is one of the most widespread frauds on Internet. The fraudsters usually make online purchases using the credit card details of other people. The following are some ugly faces of credit card fraud. Mail Non-Receipt Fraud: This fraud involves intercepting a replacement card sent to the legitimate cardholder and using it. To tackle the frauds, most of the banks have started sending out inactive cards that cannot be used until the legitimate account holder confirms his or her identity to the bank using their social security number, home address, mother's maiden name, and the number on the card. Chargeback Fraud: This fraud involves using a cardholder's credit card details for purchasing items without his/her authorization. This is a widely used fraud for making online purchases. Cyber-shoplifting or first-party fraud: It happens when legitimate cardholders use the card to buy goods or services, but the statements come claiming that they never authorized the transactions, or they never received goods or services ordered. Skimming: This fraud happens when the unscrupulous employees of legitimate merchants take the second copy a card details on the magnetic strip before processing the payment through the official EPOS terminal, and sell that information on the black market to fraudsters who create duplicate cards.
