809 Area Code Scam
In an 809 area code scam a person gets a recorded message on their answering machine urging the person to call a number beginning with the area code 809. An 809 scammer usually uses sensitive information such as a death to an ailing family member, an accident, or a wonderful prize that forces a person to make a phone call. When the call gets connected the victim caller gets an ambiguous answer either through a computer recorded message or through a person speaking in a way that's hard to understand. The person tries to give the impression that he doesn't understand what the victim says. Here the scammer uses the technique of "lingering talk" to prolong the call as long as possible. An 809 scam phone call usually ends with nothing being figured out and the victim receives a large telephone bill, often for hundreds of dollars or more. There have even been recorded cases where a person has been charged $100+/minute for calling such a number. As US Regulations have blocked 900, the 809 scammers exploit the number 809 for "pay-per-calls." The 809 number falls in the Caribbean region and are exempt from the bindings that caution about the rate and charged involved in making such a call. Once a person is victimized in an 809 scam, the fraud cannot be challenged in court. An 809 area code scam can land a person in serious trouble with creditors. Certainly it's good to be aware of the 809 scam and never ever call a number with this area code. An 809 is also often referred to as an 809 area code scam, or 809 phone scam, or 809 area code phone scam, or an 809 area code telephone scam.
